Best Way to Build an Influencer List

Influencers hold a lot of power to persuade. Tapping into that market can help you reach your PR goals faster. Use this list to help you build an influencer list. You can cap your list at 25 or try to expand it past this point.

Keep in mind the following category of influencers to see how they can best suit your campaign.

  • Nano: 0K – 10K – A Nano influencer covers niche topics. Because of their smaller community, followers engage and trust them.
  • Micro: 10K-100K – Like Nano influencers, they also cover niche topics, but have a bigger reach. Their recommendations often go far because they still authenticity connect with followers.
  • Mid: 100K – 500K – Bigger than a nano or micro, but still engaged with their audience. They are more affordable to work with and have a high engagement rate.
  • Macro: 500K – 1M – Now you’re moving into celebrities, thought leaders, and other experts in their field. Macro influencers can reach a bigger audience plus they are easier to find. While the rates are higher, than say with an nano, you get to work with one person instead of spreading your budget out over several nano or micro influencers.
  • Mega Macro: 1M+ – This is the big time. Think Kim Kardashian. One tweet from a mega macro can start a new trend and have great reach. While they have high authority, working in this category will require a very high budget.

Here is a checklist for building your influencer list.

  • Decide on your budget – Would you rather work with several micro influencers or go for a macro influencer? Decide on your budget first.

  • See if there are any relevant influencers already following your brand – You know the saying, a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush? Take a quick scroll through your current followers. See if you already have some following your brand. Since they are already brand aware, reach out to them to see if they’d be interested in a partnership.
  • Do a competitor analysis – Research who your competitors are working with. Take a look at their social accounts, website, blog posts, and more or research their company name hashtags to find mentions of influencers or sponsored posts. Check out sites like Upfluence, BuzzSumo, or HypeAuditor to analyze various influencer campaigns.
  • Research hashtags – Hashtags are a great resource for honing in on specific target markets. Search your hashtag niches to hook up with relevant influencers. You can also use tools like Hastagify and RiteTag to help.
  • Search a database – Check out databases like influence.co or BuzzSumo to check out influencers past work, engagement, and more.
  • Hire an agency – Many agencies act as a liaison between influencers and brands, making it much easier for both. Simply tell the agency about the campaign you want to run and they will put out a call to their relevant influencers. This is a great way to also test your ROI by giving a specific coupon code to the influencer for the campaign. Then you can track sales. Ask friends for recommendations or search your favorite influencers to find the agency that reps them.
  • Tap into Influencer platforms – Like an agency, different website platforms connect brands with influencers. Check out AspireIQ, Influenster, FameBit, or TapInfluence to go down this road.
  • Check with your friends and co-workers – Who do your friend’s follow? Asking friends and co-workers is a great way to tap into established influencers who might be able to help. If you’re friends with any influencers, ask who they follow and engage with.

Once you have your list, make sure it’s the best it can be with the following.

  • Double check your list for fake followers – Once you have your list, double check that you have legitimate accounts with tools like Influencer Marketing Hub or Hypeauditor.
  • Cross reference with Influencer ranking lists. You can use lists that rank influencers by the number of quality and engaged followers, such as HypeAuditor Top Authentic Influencers Ranking. You can filter the list by category and country to find influencers who match your criteria.
